Happy Monday folks!  I hope everyone was able to enjoy the wonderful weather this weekend!  I thought for sure with a 70% chance of rain, the wedding between Kristie & Matt on Saturday, would’ve been a wet one.  To our surprise, it was a beautiful day!  We couldn’t have asked for better!  I got a shot I’m pretty much in love with but it will have to wait until the happy couple returns from London & Paris at the end of the month.  I’m so living vicariously through them right now!  lol!  I did promise though I would wait for their return to post the sneak peek though as they won’t have internet.

Yesterday I got to play with cute lab puppies that were incorporated into a senior split session.  I typically do not work Sundays but this was a special request as soon, all the pups would be gone but one.  I won’t be posting pics from this session until after the full session takes place later this summer.

I do have a sneak peek to get done for another engagement session and that’s on my to-do list for today.  This Thursday I have another session with the cute little Vander Voste boys and their new little sister Nicole.  I love the enthusiasm of those kiddos and our sessions are always so much fun!

In less than two weeks I head to MT for the wedding of Krista & Nate.  I love that drive.  Call me crazy but I don’t get a lot of thinking time so I often don’t even have the radio on when I drive.  That’s my zen time, thinking of session idea time, marketing ideas, and just thinking about life in general.  If you’re ever on a long drive, just turn the radio off, don’t talk on the phone, but rather let your mind wander.  I do this in the shower too and I’ve actually gotten session ideas in the shower! lol!  Hey, when you have young kiddos, you gotta take advantage of quiet time every chance you get!  I’m sure moms can relate….going to the bathroom with the door shut often goes out the window too once you have kids.  Locking the door doesn’t help either-they know the trick to use with a screwdriver!  Or is it just my kids that are bound and determined to drive their mother crazy???  lol!

Anyway, this week with senior sessions in my mind, I want to share some what to wear guides for seniors.  Whatever your seniors style is, we can work with it.  These are just examples.  I love different, I love unique and I love seniors that have their own ideas…so bring ‘em on! :)

Have a great week everyone!  Until next time, Live, Love, and Laugh with the one you’re with…you know the drill! ;)

I’m alive!!!  I’m sure that’s what my family and friends are wondering!  I’ve been cooped up in my dungeon I call an office with my flickering, terrible fleorescent lights and brisk chill for the past several days.  I think I’ve FINALLY gotten the swing of LR3  {Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3, technically speaking}.  I just finally decided that I needed to make use of this program I spent money on rather than have it collect cyber dust.  It’s absolutely the cat’s meow!  I had purchased a Scott Kelby {well known photographer and photoshop guru guy} book and so glad I did.  When I tried to tackle it on my own, I usually ended up giving up within 10 minutes.  If you’re a photographer who just so happens to be reading this {I doubt it, but you never know}, get it-NOW, you won’t regret it!

Aside from learning this program using the images from the engagement session of the wonderful couple Cassie & Darel, I’ve been trying to get my shopping cart updated and up to snuff.  The keyword there is “trying.”  It’s really not going all that well but I am told by “my people” that a solution is possible.  I hope that is true.  I really wouldn’t want to have to take away the print & product credit that will come along with collections in my pricing structure.  The company is suppose to be coming out with a complete overhaul but have not given a release date yet.  I’m growing impatient but all the while their customer service has been great, so can’t complain there.  I just hope it’s as great as they say it is.

ANYWAY…onto the images already!!!  These two were bound and determined to have this session rain or shine.  Thankfully though the rain stayed at bay.  I actually was prepared for rain and wouldn’t have been completely disappointed but it would’ve been REALLY cold then, so that wouldn’t have been good.  The only real issue was the wind but we managed our way around that too with the awesome locations we went to.  I LOVE new locations!  Darel took the time too to carve in a tree before their session.  The ladies reading are going ”awwwww…how sweet.”  It totally is though. :)     I hadn’t chosen to post that image, but I’m hoping to take the wedding party back to that {awesome} location to get an image of Darel & Cassie in their “I Do” attire next to it.  Hopefully that works out and I’ll post it then.

Check out that tree….isn’t it awesome?!  I just really had a lot of fun with these two love birds and the different locations!  If you, as a client, want to win my heart…just take me to a location that’s just so unique and cool and I’m……one very happy photographer! ;)

I hope you enjoy the images Cassie & Darel and I so look forward to September!  I also can’t wait to see all those trees dressed in their Fall best! ;)

Another sneak peek will come early next week….can you say Harley????  This weekend I’m shooting a wedding in Bismarck and I’m well aware {and so is the bride} that there is a 70% chance of rain.  What do you do but make the most of it?  So…I did what any photographer would do…told the bride to bring her umbrella! ;)   I actually shot their engagement session a little outdoors this past winter and I thought it would be cool to have a red umbrella to contrast with the snow.  Click HERE to see that blog post, which seems like forever ago!  I hope I get the shot I’m envisioning in my mind but we can’t have a drizzle…it needs to be a nice, good rain.  Now what photographer says that????  Me, I guess!! lol!  I work with what God gives me, what can I say? :)

I want to mention too, there is an amazing event taking place in Bismarck this Saturday;  The Volkowitsch Open in honor of Missy {Meidinger} Balkowitsch.  She recently lost her battle to breast cancer that had spread.  I had grown up next door to Missy and her family and my heart goes out to them.  FYI- Volkowitsch Open is a charity golf event to support Breast Cancer.  ALL Proceeds go towards the BCRF (Breast Cancer Research Foundation) & The Bismarck Cancer Center Fountation to help one day find a cure!!  I donated a gift certificate for the event;  however, my prize doesn’t compare to the thousands in prizes being given away!  If you have nothing else to do, don’t mind a little rain, go out and support this great event!  I hope I live to see the day when there is a cure.  For more information, check out their Facebook page.

Have a great weekend everyone!  See you back here Monday!! :)

Mahalo!  How I wish I were in Hawaii sipping some sort of fruity drink by the water and sinking my toes in the sand!  {sigh}  Ah well, I guess the dirt in my driveway, the wind blowing through my hair, and some pre-bottled fruity drink will have to do!  Why you ask, may I be daydreaming about some distant island?  It’s just been a MANIC MONDAY!  I don’t know why Mondays have been so crazy for me.  I even shipped my two girls off to a sitter for a couple hours to get some things done and this blog post was suppose to be one of them!  No such luck.  I think I’ll just have to make Sunday the new Monday and maybe Monday won’t seem as crazy.

Why are ”things” so crazy?  Well, I’m trying to learn a new program for editing images but before I could start that I had to buy a 2nd external hard drive because my other one is full to capacity and HIGHLY disorganized.  In order to start this new program, it’s vital I have a ”clean slate.”  So this past weekend when I was out of town for a niece’s birthday party, I picked one up.  Also, during this past weekend I had an engagement session.  Well, actually…on Friday I had one and on Sunday I had a second for my sister-in-law who will be married this coming June.  So…. I have some sneak peeks coming up in the next few days!

Anyway, I’ve also been in the middle of getting everything in my shopping cart updated and that’s not going so great.  I’m wanting to include a print & product credit in my collections rather than selecting what sizes I think my clients should have;  however, the shopping cart system isn’t set up the best to do this.  I’m working with “my people,” {yeah, u- huh, I have people-after all, it’s who you know, right?} to find a solution.  So….that’s been in limbo.  {big sigh}

On top of the background craziness, I have fabulous people that want to see their images already!!!!  I want to show them already!!!  Where’s that magic genie that can grant me some ”mom-tog doubles” or time?  I’m still on schedule with galleries, etc. but really do feel a level of anxiety to get it all done RIGHT NOW.  I need my children gone for like a week.  I’d surely get plenty done then.  Any takers??  They don’t eat very much and usually provide free entertainment. LOL!

Anywho….I have my son’s school concert tonight, so I best be jettin’ to feed the hungry animals, er, I mean children.  I’ll leave you with another edition of What to Wear for your future family session with me!  Also to come in a future edition…What to Wear for Seniors.

Until next time when I post Cassie & Darel’s engagement session sneak peek, Live, Love, and Laugh with the one you’re with!  Happy Manic Monday!

What a crazy Tuesday!  I’ve been working on getting one gallery up, my pricing updated in the cart, and this blog post which I said I would post today!  All the while, kissing boo boo’s, enjoying some sunshine with the kiddos, and now I gotta get something cookin’ in the kitchen!  Ahhhh….the fact that I could use 4 of me is an understatement!!!

BUT…..onto more important matters…..Barry & Lisa’s sneak peek!  What a fun group!  I had a blast and hopefully you all enjoyed your time with me too.  Doesn’t Lisa look fabulous??  What woman doesn’t want to feel like a princess for a day?  And their little Cami was such a little trooper and did so well with pictures!  She’s just too cute for words!

We couldn’t have asked for better weather this day either!  I was just happy there was a little shade available as going to another location wasn’t an option.  It all worked out though and one thing I’ve learned by being an on-location photographer is that you work with what you got.  I was going to post an image of this cat that was peeking in the door of the church just before the ceremony started but decided not to….it would have been out of place, but funny.  Hmm….maybe I’ll post it next Monday.  It’s just plain cute….if that cat could talk I think he would’ve said something like “hey, where’s the litterbox?”  Okay, probably more like “hey, I didn’t get an invitation!!”

Anyway, Barry & Lisa I hope you enjoy your sneak peek!  I’ll be in touch when the gallery is ready.  Thanks to you both and your fun group for making my day so much fun!

Today’s post is rather late as I had an unexpected trip out of town.  So, to the two people who actually read my blog posts…sorry about the delay!  ;)

What a fun weekend I had!  I photographed the wedding of Lisa & Barry where I also got to see a lot of people I hadn’t seen in a long time, as well as meet some new people I’d be happy to call friends!  Shout out to the bridesmaids-you chicks are fun!! lol!  It was a great time!  The weather was beautiful, everyone was where they needed to be, and just so much fun!!

I actually ended up staying the night in Wishek the night of the wedding because my van decided to take a crapper.  It’s funny how things work out though….my mom sent me on a beer run {no joke} and when I get back, the van is running hot.  Long story short?  I have a brother-in-law that knows mechanics and gave a temporary solution to my problem so that I could make it home the next day {easy fix with a new thermostat-Yay!}.  Moral of the story?  Have a mom that sends you on beer runs!  Had she not had her craving for a clamato beer, I would’ve been down the highway who knows where with my 3 kids.  Also, marry the right guy that either A. knows auto stuff or B. has a brother {or sister-chicks can know auto stuff too} that knows auto stuff!  Really…..in life, it’s who you know a lot of the time!!! ;)   Thanks to my bro-in-law!!!

Anyway, Sunday it was Mother’s Day and I vowed to do ZERO cooking.  Hey, you gotta milk it all you can!  So…the hubby threw a couple pizzas in the oven for supper.  Although he makes pretty good knoephla soup, I didn’t get any of that. :(   For supper though, we had a very nice meal courtesy of Hague Cafe.  So…no cooking and no dishes for me!  Yay!  Double score!I hope all my family/friend/client mama’s had a lovely Mother’s Day!!!  Ugh…back to reality…I have to come up with something for supper!  Bleh.  If I would win a million dollars I would A. Hire out housekeeping and B. Have my own personal cook.  Then maybe my picky daughter would eat the food in front of her!  I’m usually a pretty tidy person but after 3 kids you just learn to ”let things go” much more easily! lol!

So that was my weekend!  Oh-I got a newsletter sent out on Saturday.  If you haven’t signed up to receive it, you should!  I didn’t send it to client’s I’ve had this year because I decided I want to be sure you receive it only if you wish to.  Know though, you won’t be getting these on an annoying basis-I just don’t have the time to bust one out more than every few months.  They take a little time to put together, so I shoot for the seasons.  You want to sign up though as I do have something up my sleeve for this Fall. :)

I hope everyone has a wonderful week!  It’s so nice to have sunshine for a change!  My daughter was picking me “sunshine flowers” {dandelions} today.  I just love that name she gave them!  Makes them seem so much less like a weed…..sunshine flowers…I like it. ;)

Well, you’ll wanna be a “liker” of my FB page as I’ll be posting a sneaky peek back here on the blog tomorrow!  Make it a great day!

Until next time….Live, Laugh, and Love the one you’re with…..they just might know someone who knows someone who knows a thing or two! :)

2011

I’ve been meaning to do a post like this for quite some time and I just had a wild hair to do it today.  There are so many things to consider when planning your wedding and one the largest investments you’ll make on your wedding day is the photography.  So how on earth do you sift through all the prospective photographer’s?  Well, that’s a loaded question and the best way I can answer it is by answering as best I can from a photographer’s perspective.  Basically, you need to approach it as if you were going on a first date.  And photographer’s and clients meeting is a lot like dating…..funny, but true.

I think the easiest way to choose a photographer is by word-of-mouth.  Just like you listen to your girlfriends about a guy to avoid, you would listen just as equally if it were a photographer.  I, personally, would more likely hire a clown for my kids’ birthday party or choose a primary physician based on a referral.  A personal experience of someone close to you, whose opinion you value and trust should definitely be worth something.  Think about how many times you’ve tried a new recipe based on what a friend said.  Granted, taste buds are all different, as well as opinions, but a friend will tell you the good, the bad, and the ugly.  When you’re investing the amount of money it takes in a wedding photographer,I’m sure you’ll sleep more soundly knowing that photographer received a seal of approval from someone you trust.

Okay, so that photographer you love has received good marks, but do you like their work?  The best way for you to know what kind of product to expect is if the photographer has a website.  In this day in age, if the photographer doesn’t have a website, that’s a terrible disservice to themselves.  Every photographer that is charging should have a web presence.  And I don’t mean some free website that anyone could get, slap some pictures on there and then charge $300 for a disc full of images.  Although, I charged $350, I believe, for my first wedding and I made it CLEAR AS DAY that I had NEVER shot a wedding before.  The bride & groom were willing to take that chance based on the work I had been producing at the time and it changed everything.  I LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT.  Wow, was I nervous though!

Anyway, all photographer’s start somewhere but I would be leery of a photographer who charges so little because really….that barely covers my cost for insurance of my equipment for a year.  I, on the other hand, was very open and honest about my experience for that wedding and the following two weddings.  It’s kinda like that old saying “how am I suppose to get experience if no one will hire me to get me experience?”  If you’re willing to chance your once-in-a-lifetime day on someone because you have faith in them, great-but know the risk when things don’t go quite as you planned or hoped.  Expectations can be quite misunderstood if both the photographer and the client aren’t on the same page.

So-web presence…I’m jumping around, I apologize.  You should really love the photographer’s work.  And I would think the photographer’s website, in most cases, would probably be the reason you inquire in the first place {second to word-of-mouth}.  Aside from the photographer’s work, it is a photographer’s hope to be able to “click” with their clients and vice-versa.  If personalities don’t match, it could really create some discomfort later.  I personally love it {and I’m sure most photographer’s do} potential clients call inquiring about  photography services, rather than just an email.  That voice to voice communication really helps build that trust relationship, helps the photographer get to know their client, and can be sure all questions are answered appropriately.  There have been times a client will call to ask a question and then we end up talking for a 1/2 hour about anything and everything!  It’s always nice when clients can become friends.  I feel that if I can build that trust and friendship relationship, your engagement session {or even portrait session} will be that much more relaxed and oh so much more fun! ;)   This also applies to dating right?  See the resemblence?

Okay-so we covered 1. how you heard about the photographer, 2. web presence, and 3. personality.  Let’s move on to 4. performance.  As I  mentioned, word-of-mouth is huge for photographer’s and I personally love referrals.  That alone tells me that I’m doing something right.  Don’t hesitate to ask a photographer for personal references, just as you would a daycare provider that you’re interviewing.  I send out surveys with my clients’ orders, with the hopes that I will hear a response about what I did right and what areas need improvement, as well as opinions about services/products I offer.  I value my clients’ opinions and have built my business model around what my clients have expressed they desired.  Another resource for referrals would be any other vendors that worked the same wedding.  I, personally, need to do a better job at paying attention to these other vendors as it’s always nice to be able to support and recommend other small businesses to my brides.

Now to tip #5. Experience.  I touched a little bit on this, stating I charged $350 for my first wedding.  Granted I had zero experience and charged accordingly.  I really had no idea what to charge.  I quickly learned though that photographing a wedding on your own is A LOT of work, a marathon really.  I’ve often considered adding a second shooter but there are so many details to be worked out doing such a thing that the thought seems overwhelming to me…moreso than just shooting a 12 hour day by myself! lol!  But really, you want to see the photographer’s portfolio and also ask a lot of questions.  I’m surprised when I meet with brides and they hardly ask me any questions.  I think I do a pretty good job of explaining things before they even get the chance to ask but certainly I don’t think of everything.  I love questions and encourage them.  If a photographer you’re interviewing seems like they’re hiding something, they probably are.  Just like that boy/girl you’re on a first date with….listen to your gut instinct!  You’ll know when something doesn’t feel right.

OH…..#6. Price. DA-DA-DAH!  So….”you get what you pay for” often rings true in most situations and is unusually true for wedding photography.  Now the couple that I charged $350 to were very pleased;  however, now-3 years later, although the images weren’t terrible, I know now how I “sucked” back then and there would be no way I’d put those in my portfolio.  That’s what’s beautiful about experience…like a fine wine, it just gets better with time.  I certainly have not reached my full potential, I know this for a fact, and probably 3 years from now, I’ll probably say the same thing about my work now as I do about my work 3 years ago today.  But if you choose a photographer that has next to zero experience, and worse of all, they didn’t share that with you or you didn’t ask, it very well will not be good.  You will NOT be happy.  Ten years from now, the photos you bought will be there on your table or on your wall to remind you of the other details that might otherwise be forgotten.  Do you really want to be reminded of the photographer you failed to ask….”so how many weddings have you done?”  If their portfolio is impressive but the answer is 5 weddings, then you’re still taking a chance but at least you know there’s some solid delivery there and probably some referrals.  I say this because I’ve had brides take that chance on me based on my work and I’m forever grateful to them.  On the flip-side, if the answer is 10 but their work is shady, images are out of focus, etc…I would give that photographer a second thought.

Finally #7.  Communication.  Finally, you’ve chosen your photographer and you’ve booked with him/her.  It is very important to communicate what you like, what you imagine, and what you expect.  Photographer’s are not mind-readers and although you probably chose that photographer for their particular style, etc….you should go one step further to insure you get the best possible photos.  I personally encourage my clients to take pictures of surroundings of a location {this helps inspire me}, and I also like to know personal details of how my couples met etc. as knowing this information can also help inspire me.  I encourage my clients to be just as much a part of the experience and share their own thoughts and ideas as well.  If it helps, tear out photos in magazines if you’re looking for a specific kind of shot or email samples of what you like.  Visual communication helps feed the creative process and help make your photos that much more personal to you.

So to recap;  the key points to think about when choosing a wedding photographer {and this can also apply to portrait photography as well}….

1.  Consider how you heard about the photographer.

2.   Do they have a web presence?

3.  Do they have a personality that would enjoy being around?

4.  Performance-do they have referrals?

5.  Experience-how many weddings have they done AND does the work they produce show that?

6.  Price-you get what you pay for.

7.  Communication

Phew!  I hope this was helpful and I can’t believe I finally got this written!  It’s been a long time-a-comin’!  If you have any further questions for me, just call or shoot me an email!  Like I tell all my clients-call if you want, but I can’t guarantee I won’t have screaming children in the background! ;) lol!

If you liked this article, click “Like”, share it, or better yet-leave a comment telling me so!  And finally…thank you to all my couples for the opportunity to be a part of your lives and for putting your trust in me.  I can’t thank you enough! ;)

2011

Well mother nature sure gave everyone a sucker-punch over the weekend with devastating tornadoes and blizzard conditions closer to home. I really hope, probably like all of you, that this will be the last of it and we can finally bust out the flip-flops. I think twice now I posted a “What-to-Wear” Spring guide, thinking that Spring had finally sprung…..not so much! Let’s hope for sunnier days ahead!

This week I was working on business stuff and sometime this week I’ll have new, beautiful session investment guide! It will include information on what to wear, session preparation, and of course investment information. I need to create a customized one for each type of session and that will take a little bit of time but I know it will be a lot “prettier” to look at than my boring, ol’ white paper with text document I have been sending clients! The wedding one will be completed first, followed by portrait session guides. Once logged in, you’ll be able to view this guide in a stylish flip-book online and of course, will be the first thing you receive when you contact me about booking a session. Yay! I’m pretty excited for everything to be completed!

This weekend I covered a 60th Anniversary event and I was able to see some classmate-friends too. In this digital age you would think people would be able to keep in touch more easily; however, I sometimes think the invention of Facebook, iphones, gizmos, and gadgets, has caused us to become more disconnected to others than ever before. At one time I was a big letter-writer; keyword-was.  I’m equally terrible about emailing friends though too.  Having kids sure does change a lot of things {then add on a business to that and a lot of things change}.  I keep wishing for more time in my day but it’s not happening.  I would be happy with super-woman energy all day long….wow, just think about what I could accomplish! ;)

Anyway, back to this lovely couple that recently celebrated 60 years of marriage.  WOW!  Just think about all they’ve seen and experienced together.  All the ups and downs of life…and through it all…love has prevailed.  When I asked Ramona what the secret is to being married 60 years {my favorite question to ask those who have been married many years}, she responded “patience, lots of patience…..trust me.”  Delmar, her husband responded “huh?”  He obviously hadn’t heard the question and I never did get a response but certainly having a “deaf” ear with my own husband is sometimes called for-lol! ;)   Here is a 10×20 storyboard I created that I think turned out pretty lovely.  It’s on a white background so you don’t see the outline but you get the idea.   60 years…..simply amazing.

I think after you’ve been married past that 7 year “hump” you can relate and know what I mean! lol ;)   I would say in my own marriage, almost 8 years now, communication and trust have definitely been key.  Up until recently my husband had a job that required travel and if I didn’t trust him and we didn’t have that open communication, things certainly would not have been good.  I’ve always been fascinated with couples who have been together a very long time.  So much changes in the first 10 years, I can’t imagine how much this is true in 30, 40, or 50 years and beyond.  And what a story a couple being together that long would have to tell.  It reminds me of that movie starring Bruce Willis & Michelle Pfeiffer that came out in 1999- “The Story of Us.”  Although they aren’t married a very long time in the movie, the dynamics of how their marriage changes over time is a story itself.

After having kids I’ve always wanted to document my own “Story of Us” in writing so one day our children can read about us, their parents, and the life we shared and knew before they were born and how things change afterwards.  What a special gift that would be to pass on to our kids.  Again, I need more time in the day or super-woman powers!  It would probably go something like this though…..”before you were born, we ate out regularly, went to movies, went bowling, met with friends, had money, and after you were born-it was diapers, nursing, Netflix, food fights, date nights {ha…that’s a joke-what date night??}, baths, bedtime stories, sweet little hugs and kisses, proud claps for accomplishments and milestones, and more love in my heart that I never knew I could hold.  Sounds like a pretty good story to me! ;)  x

Well, this coming weekend wedding season starts and so more love stories will be beginning, the same way Delmar & Ramona’s started…with an “I Do!”  Yay for love!!! :)

Have a great week everyone and you know the drill….Live, Laugh, and Love the one you’re with….if you’re going to commit to the same person for the rest of your life, you might as well laugh {and love with all your heart} along the way! ;)

P.S. I’m sure you’ve heard the news-Osama Bin Laden has been killed and buried at sea.   God Bless our military and the risks they take for the good of our country.  I’m terribly saddened though that this is what our world has come to.  I wish more for my children and their future and I ask “why can’t we all just get along?”
