What is custom photography?

Custom photography is choosing someone like me who tailors your session to your personality.  You end up with portraits that are original and unique to you.  I take pride in the time and effort I take to make your images stand out.  I can see an image that has that “something special” and I then take it one step further in post-processing. I want to provide the best images possible and in doing that, I give you my time before the session- to get to know you, during the session- to best express your personality and relationship(s), and after the session- to provide images that you will enjoy looking at for years to come.  Think of the images you’ll have to pass down to children, grandchildren, or even great-grandchildren.  By choosing custom photography, you’re also giving a gift that keeps on giving.  I would love to have images of my mom when she was pregnant with me, but I don’t.  I have no idea what she looked like pregnant…ever.  So even if you don’t think you’re photogenic, I guarantee your loved one will not care one bit 10, 15, or even 30 years down the road.

When choosing a custom photographer, you’re choosing an investment. In return, I invest several days in preparation, my time with you during your session, post-processing of images, order preparation, as well as correspondence. It very much is a process that really is on a personal level.  So if you’ve ever wondered why custom photographer’s charge what they do;  the time invested is only one of the many reasons {read on}.

Why choose custom photography, why does it cost as much as it does, and why choose VLV Photography?

I’ve posted a link under Information that explains everything you’ve ever wondered about custom photography.  You can find it here.  Regarding the next portion of the question:  why does it cost what it does?  Custom photography is an experience and more importantly an investment.  The portraits you will receive are a work of art.  I invest a lot of time in creating your portraits that just so happen to be of your life.  Custom photography can be a yearly experience you save up for or maybe just something you try just once.  Regardless, the images you receive are very different than those that will be taken from your point and shoot and printed at Walgreens or from Snapfish.  And the experience is vastly different than the ”run of the mil” big box studios.  You receive quality prints that are coated for protection, and everything 8×10 and larger is mounted for durability and longevity.  Do you get that quality from the previous places I mentioned?  Also, there are a variety of products offered that are only offered through me and not by your consumer, big-box company.  I could really go on and on; however, just look at the images you already have of your family, your children, etc…..if you are completely satisfied passing those images on for generations, then that’s wonderful.  But if you’re looking for something special to pass onto your loved ones, then I look forward hearing from you.

So if you’ve now decided you’d like to give custom photography a try, I’ll elaborate on the third part of the question-why choose VLV Photography?  I’m an in-the-moment, creatively fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants, lifestyle photographer.  What does that mean?  It means that because 90% of the time I am heading to a location for a shoot, I’ve never seen it before, so I have to use the elements around me to their utmost potential.  I also find out more about you and the relationships of those being photographed in order to better serve you.  I get ideas for your session based on your interests and love incorporating anything special to my clients into my sessions.  Additionally, I will get down on the ground with the kids and play and interact.  I’m a mom to three young children and I know first-hand the power of make-believe to get a child to open up and allow their personality shine through.  When a child is at ease, free to explore, not having to ”perform,” you end up with images that are genuine.  So what if your child is sticking their tongue out…that’s the moment!  I love to capture moments.

**More importantly though, I am a legit business that is registered and I pay taxes.  I will also be taking my business one step further by getting my LLC and am preparing to become certified.  I am NOT a “shoot-n-burn photographer” that will photograph you for $100 and hand you a cd that will sit in a closet somewhere or worse, will leave you with poor quality prints.  I am a finished product photographer.  Quality is important to me, not quantity.  If these qualities are important to you as well, then please, give me a call.  I look forward working with you.

How far in advance should I book my session?

Sessions are booking up to 4 weeks in advance.  In order to get the best chance of getting a desired session date-plan and book early.  I offer a limited number of sessions each month and do not hold sessions on Sundays-that’s family day.   If you need a “last minute” session, I’ll do my best to accommodate your request; this would especially apply to a newborn session.

What to wear?

You may wear whatever you feel comfortable wearing. If you want to coordinate, it’s best to choose one outfit and draw colors out of that one outfit.  More often than not, being too ”matchy-matchy” doesn’t work.  For kiddos, anything goes…tutu’s, silly hats, costumes, suit and tie, dresses, leggings, you name it! Keep in mind, the more relaxed they are, the more it will show in the photos! I encourage you to bring several changes of clothing if you need help deciding.  Just taking a look at Old Navy’s website can offer some insight into the ”what should I wear?” question. I place no limits on clothing changes or locations. I shoot until I’ve gotten what I want in the time allowed depending on the type of session.  Also, if there is a special item/prop you want in the photo, discuss that with me prior to the session.  You will receive information via email covering this topic once you book a session as well.  You can also view my blog post here that shows examples of some coordinating outfits for the entire family.

How long does a typical session last and how many locations am I allowed?

Family, Maternity, and Children sessions are allowed up to 2 hours.  Senior sessions may last up to 3 hours due to several clothing/location changes.  I allow the most time for Newborn sessions-up to 4 hours-so there’s plenty of time for soothing, changing, and cuddling.  Newborn sessions are not rushed.  Being a mom, I understand being on the schedule of a newborn…there isn’t one!  So I certainly understand the need to make plenty of time for feedings, diaper changes, and comforting.

Do you accept credit cards?

You bet-Visa, MasterCard, or Discover!

Do you offer refunds?

No;  however, I take pride in the service and products I provide, therefore, it is very important to me that you are a happy client.

When will I be able to see my images?

You will be able to see a “sneak peek” from your session within a few days. Galleries will be viewable within 2 weeks for portraits and 6 weeks for weddings.

Do you have a dedicated studio?

No–who needs one when you have the great outdoors or your home?  That’s right, I come to YOU, wherever that may be!  I have done this long enough to know how to make something out of, what may seem to you, as being nothing.  I love the challenge of a new location that I’ve never seen.  It is up to me to be able to use what I am given and create beautiful art pieces of the ones you love for your home.

Do you travel for photo sessions?

Yes,  I love warm beaches {wink, wink}! ;)   Really though, I come to you and am willing to travel.  (mileage/travel fees may apply)
