Spontaneously, Naturally, You.
My Portrait Session Style
You know how a child gets that look on his/her face when they blow the seeds of a dandelion in the wind for the first time? How precious a newborn looks as they yawn? Or that feeling you get when the one you love whispers something in your ear only you would understand that makes your heart smile and your face light up? These all have one thing in common…..
These are all the moments in life we hope to hold on to and never wish to forget. I never want to forget how serious and intense my son looks as he draws a picture and the whole time his tongue is curled on his top lip. When he’s older, I’ll have an image of that memory to share with him. What are the little things your child does that are unique to them that you never wish to forget? Do you have an image of it to hold onto forever? I keep things like this in mind when I’m photographing children. Capturing images as they explore, do, create, imagine, play…. I can incorporate posed shots; however, I think the session is more fun and relaxed if the session seems more like play-time with the “lady with the big, black box.” Also, if children feel like they need to “perform,” well….as a mom myself, I know how that goes!
My style involves mostly natural light because there’s nothing else like it and I’m also drawn to elements and backgrounds found naturally outdoors. However, I love creating my own light artificially on location, or enhancing the light that is already available. I love peeling paint, old tractors, lake/river with a sandy beach, a beautiful flower garden, buildings with interesting architecture or texture, wheat fields, etc. My interest also lies in lifestyle-type portraiture, capturing families/children, for instance, in their own home using available natural light. This is a style that doesn’t seem very common in this region; however, is a different way to capture a family as their day unfolds. And what mom/dad out there wouldn’t love to not have to drag the kids elsewhere for family portraits?
The possibilities are endless and with a little creativity, I bring something unique to my sessions in order to give my clients not just photographs but rather pieces of art to grace their walls. Do you love fishing as a family and have a boat? Great! We can incorporate that into your session. This holds true for any activity/hobbies you share as a family or that your children enjoy.
My Wedding Coverage Style
When it comes to weddings, I love being given the opportunity to be able to have the bride and groom (and if possible, the bridal party), come to a couple different locations for some fun, creative shots. I will do the typical alter shots for the bride and groom/bridal party if requested; however, prefer to reserve these types of shots for formal family portraits.
The best way to describe how I photograph a wedding is really just moment to moment as the day unfolds. How I choose to edit my images, however; is a little different. Majority of my images will be clean color with some contrast. I will pick a dozen or so favorites and add my “sparkle” to them and would describe these as being romantic, dreamy, and a little vintage. I love black and white as well and you’ll see this most often with newborn sessions.
So if a fun, relaxed, feel-good session and experience is what you’re looking forward to, then I look forward to being your photographer!
